These trees are in ancient forest south of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Big Island makes much of its own weather, and each area of the island has different climactic characteristics.

The area this forest exits in is heavily rained upon, and hasn't been overrun by lava in a good, long time - by Big Island standards. There are some ancient lava trunks nearby though.

These trees are absolutely massive compared to the other vegitation on the island, and as such the forest has a bit of an enchanted feel to it. Being covered by tall canopy isn't uncommon in a Hawaiian rainforest, but this canopy has a different feel, with very little low to mid-lying vegitation. The tall trees choke off much of the light, and you end up with a very different type of rainforest.
