When you first enter Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, you're greeted with a strange and often unnerving sight.

The ground beneath you is alive. The paths and trails are as malleable as a maze, constantly being adjusted by park staff to try and ensure safety.

Steam pours out of open cracks in the ground that grow as large as cars and don't simply spew for a bit then stop, they're constant.

It's not recommended that you hop the barriers and take a little steam bath... but we did.
